The short story: Manasquan Auto Diagnostic (MAD) does phenomenal, honest work. I found out the hard and expensive way, but you don't have to. I went and received knowledgeable, trustworthy, and reliable, professional service!! The long story: It all started with my check engine light. Last month, I dropped my car off at the Volkswagen dealership for a diagnostic test. A few hours later I got an urgent call from the service technician. He had news for me in 2 parts. He said that their diagnostic test revealed the check engine light was on due to out-of-date software, a required MAP update, and the throttle body needing to be cleaned and/or replaced. He let that sink in and then dramatically, he asked if I remembered he had mentioned 2 parts at the start of the call. Phase 1, he continued, would be to clean the throttle body and update the software, but if this did not work then Phase 2 is recommended, which includes replacing the throttle body altogether; and that part has been on back-order for some time with no ETA (estimated time of arrival). The verbal estimate for both phases was over $1255. Oh, and I also had a broken exhaust clamp. Unfortunately, for me I told him that I although I would not be moving forward with the throttle body work they could replace the clamp. He pressured me to approve the other work, saying the throttle body work is more urgent than the broken clamp. Nope, but I said I would plan for it later. Now, I wish that I had not authorized ANY work other than the test because a few days later when I reached out to a former coworker whose husband does auto work, and told them what the dealership said he said it didn't sound right and suggested a 2nd opinion from MAD. This is when I searched for the paperwork the dealership gave me and realized that I had only been given a receipt and invoice for the test but not the report itself. When I had picked up my car there was a dispute about the price. The service technician quoted the total due as one thing over the phone and a different price when I arrived to pay. It seems like common sense and best sales practice to tell the customer what the price will be if there will be a difference using credit versus cash, but perhaps this is uncommon sense. So, I was not happy about this and left before realizing that he only gave me a receipt for the test but not diagnostic test report itself. When I returned to the dealership for the report, the same service technician insisted that he had already given it to me and was quite uncooperative when I asked him to reprint it. This is where it gets more interesting. He only gave me 3 pages of a 7-page report, and getting each page was like pulling crocodile teeth! The first page he gave me labeled "7 of 7" had a whole list of things that he NEVER mentioned to me but yet were listed as "declined." I asked for more information and he printed another page, just one, labeled "4 of 7," which had 8 items listed as "Critical Concerns, but he had only mentioned 4 of the issues to me and declined the others on my behalf. Chivalry is not dead folks! Now, I was beginning to understand why he might not want to give me the full report. The other problems were a front axle leak, a front sway bar link leak, and my tires being worn "below spec." I guess these were minor and I didn't need to know about them (smh). I asked for a printout showing the estimates that he quoted over the phone and finally, I asked for something totally outrageous based on the disgusted look that he gave me: "Where is the information with the code that he said was responsible for the check engine light being on?" Imagine, the nerve of me asking for information that I paid for! He printed 1 more page showing P0442 and identified this as the reason that my car needs the throttle body work. I asked to speak with the manager, any manager to find out why I was not told about ALL the things listed as critical before, since I believe that his omissions endangered my safety. He said the service manager is not there and no other person can help me. Folks, I had to email the service manager for the full report which I finally got 10 days later, with a belated apology. Unbelievable! The difference: When I called MAD and spoke with Courtney she immediately disputed that P0442 had anything to do with the throttle body. Knowledgeable! I dropped my car off. MAD sent me a full report with pictures and links to video proving what they found! Professional! They advised that they believe the issue resulted from a bad valve and replaced it. The check engine light issued is now resolved. Trustworthy! TLDR: I am so grateful for service that I received from Manasquan Auto Diagnostic and recommend them without reservation!
