Howell Township, NJ
Howell Township is located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, covering more than 60 square miles of land and housing a population of roughly 52,000 people. It was named for Richard Howell, who served from 1794 to 1801 as the state’s third governor.
The area was formally incorporated as a township in 1801 from portions of Shrewsbury Township. Howell Township completely surrounds the borough of Farmingdale, one of New Jersey’s several doughnut towns where one municipality entirely surrounds another. The Manasquan Reservoir lies in the center of Howell Township, offering such activities as fishing, bird watching, jogging and biking, plus a nature exhibit to see local wildlife. There’s also fishing and kayaking on Echo Lake, along with a pavilion overlooking the water.
